Blackwater River

Experience Ireland at its best. Why not set aside a few days for a great fishing trip in beautiful Ireland.
3 days of fishing Blackwater River

Blackwater RiverThe Munster Blackwater is Ireland's second largest river, after the mighty Shannon. It begins in the mountains of East Kerry and flows eastwards for 120 km through Cork and Waterford before flowing into the sea at Youghal in East Cork. It is an extremely beautiful river and has the nickname "The Irish Rhine". Although it is a large river it is not as exposed to the weather's whims, like so many other rivers, making for good fishing even at low tide.

The river takes on between 5000 and 6000 salmon every year. Statistics say that in 1998, Blackwater had the third highest catch rate among the Atlantic rivers of the year. These include among others Canada, Norway, Iceland and Scotland. It was beaten only by two rivers on the Kola Peninsula in Russia. We can offer a full package for fishermen, where we travel together as a group with a Norwegian guide, or you can travel on your own or with your family and friends.

Fishing LodgeThe fishing lodge we offer is superb. It is a nice quiet place with a great view of the river. This is a B & B establishment, which will serve breakfast in the morning and on order can even prepare packed lunches before your day of travel and fishing. Dinner may be ordered at the nearby village, Ballyduff. There are also typical Irish pubs only 15min walk from the lodge for those in the mood for beer after the days’ activities. You are also welcome to bring your own drinks to enjoy at the lodge’s private bar.

There is also a small tackle shop at the lodge where you can buy the equipment you need like flies and spinners. The lodge also has its own smokehouse where you can get salmon smoked and vacuum packed before the journey home to Norway.

Ian is the owner and manager of the lodge since 1986. He is originally from Wales and is a passionate salmon and sea trout fisherman himself. Ian takes care of the daily operations of the lodge, and has a wealth of knowledge to share when it comes to information about fishing locally or around the rest of Ireland.

Blackwater RiverGlenda, Ian’s wife, hails from Belfast. She is a Gillie(a fishing guide) instructing on all kinds of fly fishing to the most advanced spey casts. Glenda is the highest qualified female salmon fly fishing instructor outside the USA. She is the World Masters Ladies Salmon Distance Champion. She has been on both The Scottish Ladies team and The Irish Ladies Team. Glenda offers lessons for both beginners and experienced anglers. No matter how good or bad you think you are at fly fishing, an hour or two with a World Champion will always be benificial.

The lodge is about a 4hours’ drive from Dublin. It is possible to rent equipment if desired. It is possible to fish with flies, spinners, spoons, worms or shrimp. The lodge operates with 7 beats and you will receive a map with driving directions for the beat to fish on. In addition to the price an Irish fishing license must be acquired.
